PAScapes is conducting a research project focused on Jewish spaces and mass killing sites in post-Holocaust society, exploring their historical, cultural, and environmental significance. The project, led by historian Nerijus Šepetys, specifically investigates the “Holocaust by bullets” in Lithuania, a critical yet often underexplored aspect of genocide in Eastern Europe. The physical remnants of former Jewish communities and mass killing sites, often situated close to local communities, play a vital role in shaping the lived memories of the Holocaust.
The group, in collaboration with partners from different research institutes, employs various methods, including oral history, literary analysis, archival research, and GIS analysis, to explore the ties between landscapes and memories. By comparing the findings with official memory politics, the project seeks to expand the conceptual understanding of post-Holocaust society.
