PAScapes Landscape Research Laboratory named after Prof. Pauliaus Kavaliauskas

On 6 February 2025, the PAScapes Landscape Research Laboratory (at the Institute of Geosciences, Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, Vilnius University) was named after geographer and landscape architect Prof. Pauliaus Kavaliauskas.

Prof. Paulius Kavaliauskas (1945-2024) was one of Lithuania’s most prominent geographers and landscape specialists, who contributed to the establishment of the country’s protected areas system, planning of national parks and the formulation of landscape policy. He wrote over 350 scientific articles, 19 monographs, and drafted strategic documents and legislation relevant to environmental protection and spatial planning. As a professor at Vilnius University, he trained a new generation of geographers and actively participated in academic and practical discussions on landscape management in Lithuania.
